Best West Virginia University Basketball Players of All Time
In honor of their appearance in the Sweet 16 - the best in the history of Mountaineer basketball.

Jerry West
West proved to be a future West Virgina great in 1958 during his Sophomore year when he averaged 17.8 points per game and 11.1 rebounds per game. That same season West was named second and third-team All-American and first-team all-Southern Conference. His numbers would only get better from there. West's junior season he would average 26.6 points per game, 12.3 rebounds per game, and 86 assists. His numbers his senior year were even better with 29.3 points per game, 16.5 rebounds per game and 134 assists on the season. Jerry West Would finish his career at West Virgina with 2,309 points and 1,240 rebounds. He still holds numerous school records like most points scored, most points per game, most rebounds and most 30-point games just to name a few.
Rod "Hot Rod" Hundley
Hundley's sophomore year for the Mountaineers he averaged 23.7 points per game and 8.1 rebounds in 30 games. As a junior in 1956, Hundley set career-high points per game with 26.6 and rebounds per game with 13.1. His first 8 games that season Hundley scored over 20 points. His final season at West Virgina Hundley averaged 23.1 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Hundley was the fourth player in NCAA history to score more than 2,000 points during his career. He averaged 24.5 points and 10.6 rebounds per game in three seasons and finished his career at West Virgina with 2,180 points. He was a two-time, first team All-American and still holds multiple school records. He is also the only Mountaineer to be drafted first overall in a NBA Draft.
Kevin Pittsnogle
Pittsnogle was primarily used as an off the bench player at first, putting up big numbers his freshmen year, scoring 26 points against Rutgers and 24 against Syracuse. In February 2005, Kevin was put in the starting lineup against Pitt where he would score 27 points and would help West Virginia make it to the 2005 NCAA tournament. He would score 22 points and 8 rebounds in the Sweet Sixteen win over Texas Tech but the Mountaineers would fall in overtime in the elite eight to Louisville, were Pittsnogle would score 25 points and have 9 rebounds in the lose. Pittsnogle declared for the 2005 NBA Draft but did not hire an agent and would decide to stay for his senior season. The Mountaineers would make a second appearance to the Sweet Sixteen in 2006 where they would lose 74 to 71 to a last second three pointer by Texas. Pittsnogle would end his career with the Mountaineers has the 6th most points in a career (1,708), the 2nd best 3-point field goal percentage in a career (41.1%).
Ron "Fritz" Williams
Ron "Fritz" Williams was one of the first African American athletes to play for West Virgina. He played 84 career games for the Mountaineers from 1965-68, where he would score 1,687 career points with a 20.1 points per game average. Fritz also broke school records for assists with 197 in 1966-67. He scored 20 or more points in a game 46 times in his career.
